Mother Shipton's Cave wins Small Visitor Attraction of the Year at Visit York Tourism Awards 2026
The historic attraction Mother Shipton’s Cave has been named Small Visitor Attraction of the Year at the 2026 Visit York Tourism Awards, recognising the site’s outstanding visitor experience and dedication to preserving its natural and historic heritage.
The category saw strong competition, with finalists including Sledmere House and Gardens, Stump Cross Caverns and Woldies.
Held on 12 March at York Racecourse, the annual awards celebrate excellence across York and the surrounding region’s tourism and hospitality sector.
During judging, a mystery shopper praised the attraction’s unique setting and high standards, commenting:
“The attraction takes its natural heritage and important history into account. The natural beauty of the walk, the river, the well and the caves is stunning, and the team work hard to highlight this. Every area of the attraction was well maintained, clean and tidy, and all the team members we spoke to were helpful and attentive – we felt very valued as customers.”
Set in the scenic riverside town of Knaresborough, Mother Shipton’s Cave is famous as the legendary birthplace of the Yorkshire prophetess Mother Shipton and home to the iconic Petrifying Well. Visitors explore the wooded riverside path along the River Nidd, discovering the cave, well and historic surroundings that have fascinated visitors for centuries.
