England’s oldest paid visitor attraction, Mother Shipton’s Cave in North Yorkshire, has secured comprehensive legal protection for its unique brand for the first time in its over 500-year history, and its fully rebranded online shop has opened this week. The launch forms part of a wider transformation that includes a new visual identity, refreshed storytelling, and trademark protection for the Mother Shipton’s name and associated products.

The Knaresborough visitor attraction comprises parkland including the historic cave, the birthplace of England’s most famous Prophetess, The Petrifying Well and The Wishing Well. It has been visited by millions of people from around the world seeking to learn more about the story of Mother Shipton, who legend has it, foresaw the invention of iron ships, the Great Fire of London in 1666, and the defeat of the Spanish Armada.

The attraction has now officially trademarked the name ‘Mother Shipton’s Cave’ as well as the logos featuring the name “Mother Shipton’s”, meaning they cannot be used by other individuals or businesses for a wide range of goods and services.

The owner of Mother Shipton’s Cave, Fiona Martin, worked with trademark specialists at full-service law firm, Ward Hadaway which included partner and chartered trademark attorney and head of intellectual property, Bill Goodwin, trademark attorney Sonia Burgess, and supported by trademark paralegal Jowita Koloda. As part of the trademark process, the company has protected the brand names specifically in relation to some of its most unique retail items, including its ‘Petrified Teddy Bears’ – ordinary teddy bears that ‘turn to stone’ over a 3-5 month period having been placed in the Petrifying Well.

The online shop will offer a curated selection of one-of-a-kind petrified items, including the trademark protected Petrified Teddy Bears, along with water drawn from the historic Wishing Well. Visitors will also find a full range of souvenirs celebrating the reimagined illustration of Mother Shipton, sweets and biscuits, and exclusive ghost ornaments adorned with Mother Shipton’s famous prophecies, with completely updated packaging that reflects the new creative direction.

The rebrand positions Mother Shipton’s Cave as a contemporary folklore experience rooted in five centuries of legend. The refreshed imagery presents a modern interpretation of the iconic prophetess while remaining true to the ancient woodland, the mystical Petrifying Well, and the rich storytelling that draws visitors from around the world.

“Our trademark protection and our new online shop move us into the next chapter of the site’s story,” said Fiona Martin, owner of Mother Shipton’s Cave. “The online shop lets people take home a piece of the magic, wherever they are. Everything has been carefully designed to celebrate the magic and history of Mother Shipton in a way that feels authentic and contemporary.”

Speaking about the project, Bill Goodwin said, “Mother Shipton’s Cave is a truly unique and unusual business. Trade marking brand names and associated products and services can be easily overlooked, but it is crucial to protect them and the value attached to them. Especially when that value has been accumulated over many years and is specific to the particular brand or there is a risk of imitation.

“It’s sometimes assumed that to do so, brands need to engage with legal practices that only specialise in trade mark work, but at Ward Hadaway we have built an in-house team of experts, dedicated trade mark attorneys and paralegals, who advise on matters across the country. We also have the benefit of being a full-service firm, with a specialist retail and leisure team that can offer extended legal advice on a range of issues, delivering an end-to-end service to the leisure, retail and hospitality industry.”
