About Us

Mother Shipton's Cave in Knaresborough is England's Oldest Tourist Attraction, open since 1630, and is also the legendary birthplace of England's most famous prophetess. The small cave where she was born tells the story of her life and legacy, alongside the unique geological phenomenon of the petrifying well. The attraction also offers something for all ages, with events during the school holidays and plenty of magic and wonder to discover as you wander through the ancient forest.

Nestled amidst the picturesque town of Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, our site boasts riverside walks, fascinating history, and breath-taking views.
The Petrifying Well is a natural wonder that visitors have come to see for hundreds of years, as the uniquely high mineral content in the water 'turns items to stone' as if by magic. You can also visit the small cave where, legend has it, a prophetess was born, and make a wish in the famous wishing well.
Interactive themed events for families take place during school half terms for Easter, May, Summer, Halloween and Christmas.
We are easily accessible by car or public transport. Get ready to be captivated by the stories, scenery, and supernatural wonders that await you at England's oldest attraction.
